Holyrood Palace, officially the Palace of Holyroodhouse, is the British monarch’s official residence in Scotland. It sits at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, opposite Holyrood Park.
Founded as a royal residence in the 16th century, the palace is closely associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, whose apartments are among its most famous and historically dramatic rooms. Over time, it evolved from an abbey guesthouse into a grand palace.
Today, Holyrood Palace is used for state ceremonies and official events when the monarch is in Scotland, and it is also open to the public, showcasing historic rooms, art, and the ruins of Holyrood Abbey alongside the palace grounds.
